Frequently Asked Questions
What is couples therapy?
Couples therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy that helps partners improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen their relationship. We help you understand the patterns keeping you stuck, develop tools to move past them, and deepen your understanding of each other so you can build a stronger, more connected bond.
Is couples therapy effective?
Yes, and the research is clear. Emotionally Focused Therapy, the approach our entire practice is built around, has some of the strongest outcome data in the field. Studies show that 70-75% of couples move from distress to full recovery, and 90% show significant improvement. Couples who commit to the process consistently report better communication, deeper emotional connection, and lasting change.
What qualifications do you have?
Our practice specializes exclusively in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the most research-backed approach in couples therapy. Our practice is founded and led by Stephanie Saari, LMFT, one of a small number of Certified EFT Therapists and Supervisors in California. This designation requires rigorous advanced training, extensive supervised practice, and ongoing commitment to the highest standards in the field. Every therapist at our practice is trained in EFT and supervised to that standard, so whoever you work with, you’re receiving the
same depth of specialized expertise.
How often do we need to attend therapy sessions?
We recommend weekly sessions to start, consistency is the most important factor in making steady progress. Weekly attendance builds momentum, deepens the work, and helps you develop new patterns more quickly.
Think of it like going to the gym: the commitment to showing up regularly is what creates results. Moving to bi-weekly sessions may become an option over time and can be discussed with your therapist as you progress.
What can I expect during my first session?
Your first session is about getting to know you, your current challenges, your relationship history, and what you’re hoping to change. We’ll create a safe and supportive space for you to share openly and begin to identify
the patterns that have been keeping you stuck. Most people feel a sense of relief after their first session and find it more comfortable than they expected.
What kind of topics can we discuss in therapy?
You can bring anything that’s affecting your relationship, communication and conflict patterns, emotional disconnection, intimacy and sex, infidelity and trust repair, family stress, major life transitions, and more. There are no off-limits topics. Feeling genuinely free to discuss what’s really going on is one of the most important conditions for therapy to work.
Do you provide in-person therapy?
Yes, we offer both in-person and online sessions. Our Danville, California office sees clients in person, and we offer online sessions via our HIPAA-compliant platform for clients anywhere in California. Therapist availability for in-person versus online sessions varies – our intake coordinator will help match you with the right therapist and format based on your needs and preferences.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person?
Yes – research consistently shows that online therapy produces equivalent outcomes to in-person sessions for couples work. Many clients find that the comfort and privacy of being at home actually makes it easier to open up. Our online sessions are conducted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, all you need is a device with a camera and a private space.
Is couples therapy confidential?
Yes, everything discussed in therapy is confidential. We are legally and ethically bound to protect your privacy. The only exceptions are those required by law, specifically, situations involving a risk of harm to yourself or others. Outside of those narrow circumstances, what you share stays in the room.
How long does couples therapy take?
The duration varies depending on the complexity of the issues and the goals you bring to therapy. Most couples working with us see meaningful progress within 8-16 sessions, though some choose to continue longer to work through deeper patterns or consolidate their gains. Your therapist will discuss pacing and progress with you throughout the process.
Do you work with couples of all orientations and cultures?
Absolutely. We are experienced in supporting couples of all orientations, backgrounds, and cultures. All are welcome here.
Can I attend therapy sessions alone if my partner doesn't want to participate?
Yes, meaningful work can be done with just one partner. Individual relationship therapy helps you understand your own patterns, develop new ways of responding, and shift the dynamic in your relationship even if your partner isn’t in the room. We offer both individual and couples therapy and will work with whatever your situation allows.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance directly. However, if you have out-of-network mental health benefits, we can provide you with a superbill, an itemized receipt you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We recommend calling your insurer before your first session to ask about your out-of-network coverage.
What are your fees?
Our session rates vary by therapist:
Stephanie Saari, LMFT – $295 (50 min) / $450 (80 min)
Jill Cepela, LMFT – $225 (50 min) / $355 (80 min)
Alexandra Beatty, AMFT – $195 (50 min) / $285 (80 min)
Justin Inbar, AMFT – $175 (50 min) / $275 (80 min)
How do I get started?
The first step is scheduling a complimentary 20-minute video consultation. This is a chance to talk about what’s been happening, ask any questions you have, and find out whether we’re the right fit, with no commitment required.
What is The Foundation Program?
The Foundation Program is our signature 8-session premarital counseling program, built entirely around Emotionally Focused Therapy. Unlike traditional premarital programs that work through a checklist of topics, The Foundation Program helps couples understand their attachment styles, identify their conflict cycle before it becomes entrenched, and build the emotional safety that sustains a marriage long after the wedding day. Learn more on our Premarital Counseling page.
